Applications are invited for appointment as System Architect, to commence as soon as possible for up to two years, with the possibility of renewal subject to satisfactory performance.
The appointee will join the Laboratory of Data Discovery for Health (D24H), a start-up company incorporated by The University of Hong Kong (HKU) that is led by senior faculty members of the Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine at HKU. The D24H sets to play pivotal role in gathering and curating massive, unique data resources and to develop new, deep, frontier analytics in protecting global public health and improving individual healthcare through precision medicine.
Job Summary:
As a System Architect, you will be responsible for coding APIs, implementing DevOps practices, designing, configuring, and operating on computer systems including servers, hardware, software, firewall and security. You will play a crucial role in developing and maintaining our backend infrastructure, ensuring the scalability, reliability performance. Your primary focus will be on the development of server-side logic, database integration, and API implementation. Additionally, you will actively participate in the design, testing, deployment, and maintenance of our software systems and infrastructure.
Responsibilities:
- Develop the strategic system architecture plan and ensure system security, reliability, and scalability by implementing industry best practices;
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to design, develop, and implement RESTful/GraphQL APIs and backend services by using popular programming languages, such as Python and JavaScript, and frameworks;
- Integrate databases, data storage solutions, and other third-party services to ensure seamless functionality;
- Optimize backend performance and scalability to support high traffic and large-scale applications;
- Develop and implement DevOps practices, including continuous integration, continuous deployment, and automated testing;
- Perform code reviews, debugging, and troubleshooting to identify and fix software defects and performance issues;
- Collaborate with front-end developers to ensure smooth integration and consistent user experience;
- Work on document code, technical specifications, and processes to facilitate knowledge sharing and ensure maintainability;
- Keeping up-to-date with emerging technologies and industry trends, and incorporating them into system architecture design and development process for improvement;
- Adhere to coding standards, software development methodologies, and project guidelines; and
- Perform other job duties as assigned by the management of the Company.
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree or above in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related disciplines;
- Not less than 7 years of working experience, focusing on API development, Enterprise Architecture and DevOps;
- Ability to analyse complex technical requirements and translate them into effective system designs;
- Strong understanding of the latest concepts in Enterprise Architecture (i.e. TOGAF, Zachman), backend architecture such as microservice architecture and design patterns;
- Demonstrated track record in building backend applications utilising FastAPI, Flask, Django, and/or Node.js framework;
- Experience with cloud platforms, particularly AWS and Azure, is highly preferred and Familiarity with databases (SQL and/or NoSQL) with ORM frameworks;
- Proficiency in infrastructure technologies, including cloud computing, virtualisation, and networking, as well as version control system such as Git;
- Experience with containerization technologies (e.g., Docker) and container orchestration (e.g., Kubernetes) is a plus;
- Ability to analyse complex technical requirements and translate them into effective system designs; and
- Excellent communication, collaboration skills and work independently.
