M+ Conservation is housed in state-of-the-art facilities designed around the needs for care and study of a significant repository of contemporary artworks representing visual culture in Hong Kong, Asia, and beyond. The departmental practice is organized around investigations into the material and digital history of artworks in our collection, and how to store, treat, and prepare them for display. Reporting to the Head, Conservation and Research, you will be a core member of the conservation team which encompasses various disciplines including painting, paper, photography, objects, time-based media, preventive conservation, and science. The associate Time-Based Media conservator will be involved in the treatment and care all forms of time-based media and performance-based art (e.g., single and multi-channel video, slide, film, audio, as well as software/digital artworks, happenings, and dance). 

Working in collaboration with the Digital and Media Art conservation team, you will be responsible for:

  • contributing to the preservation of the TBM collection by participating in a wide range of conservation related activities such as examination, condition assessments, documentation, conservation treatment and all necessary interventions required for long-term preservation of such collection items;
  • In collaboration with the Digital and Media art conservator, you would help formulate the long-term preservation strategies for TBM and advise on acquisitions by providing recommendations for maintenance, care and display;
  • preparing and treating TBM artworks for loans and exhibitions;
  • advising and training staff in best practices for the care, handling, display, storage, packing and shipping of TBM collection items;
  • conducting specialised research into the materials, techniques and practices of artists represented in the collection; and
  • co-supervising conservation volunteers or interns as required and contributing to relevant outreach activities.

You should:

  • possess a master’s degree or a diploma in conservation from a recognised training programme;
  • be able to address preservation needs of items that include performance art, digital artworks and other media;
  • have a demonstrable understanding of digital, software, and web-based artworks or related experience in the field of web or application development;
  • proven experience documenting and treating a range of collection items to a high standard;
  • have at least 3 years of practical postgraduate experience working with Time-Based Media in a museum or similar institution. Candidates with less experience may be considered for the position of Assistant Conservator, Time-Base Media;
  • preferably have some experience with software development (basic knowledge of Python and HTML would be helpful at a minimum) and the desire to learn additional programming languages as is necessary to investigate individual software artworks;
  • have an interest in understanding how the preservation of code can be incorporated into treatment plans for software based works;
  • work collaboratively with the rest of conservation team and with any other relevant stakeholders across the museum;
  • be knowledgeable/interested in modern and contemporary visual culture, architecture and design, including materials and techniques;
  • be an innovative and enthusiastic team player with strong critical thinking and problem solving skills;
  • be able to work in a fast paced and continuously challenging environment; and
  • have strong oral, written and interpersonal communication skills in English and preferably in Chinese (Cantonese or Mandarin).
